Parque Terra Nostra
Parque Terra Nostra began in 1775 with a wealthy merchant originally from Boston, the first Honorary Consul of the United States in São Miguel with the construction of a wooden house, a thermal water tank with an island in the middle, surrounded by trees where the great English oak can still be found, to this day with the Bensaúde family. The garden has an area of 12.5 hectares composed of more than 3000 specimens of arboreal species and shrubs, with great emphasis on centenary trees of the Metrosideros and Araucaria genera, and species of liriodendron tulipifera, Sequoias sempervirens, Quercus robur, Taxodium ascendens, Taxodium distichum, Eucalyptus globulus , Ginkgo biloba, the Fetus collection, the Endemic and Native Flora of the Azores garden, the Bromeliaceae collection, the giant water lily Victoria cruziana and one of the most remarkable collections of camellias in the world, with more than 600 specimens of different species and cultivars . In 2014, it received the award for “Garden of Camellias of Excellence”, from the International Camellia Society (ICS) and is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe. It also has a large thermal hot water pool with iron water at a temperature between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, ideal for a relaxing bath with medicinal properties and a jacuzzi space has recently been added, with the creation of two more relaxation zones.
