Parque da Grená
Parque da Grená – the history of the Grená property dates back to 1858. Vines, the English consul of Ponta Delgada, built a summer house on the property and named it Grená in honor of his wife, who spent her childhood summers in Ireland , in a family house of that name. After the consul’s death, the property had several owners until it was acquired by the Portuguese government in 1987. The main objective was to house high-ranking government figures there when visiting São Miguel. However, the entire property ended up being abandoned, especially the degradation of the property. In 2015, after much internal bureaucracy, the Portuguese government transferred ownership of Grená to the Autonomous Region of the Azores. In 2018, the Azorean government decides to sell the Grená property to a private entity by public auction. Parque da Grená opened in December 2019.
The park extends over 18 hectares and the trail is about 5 km long. The main points of the park are: the ruins of the Grená manor house from 1858, Vale da Grená, Avenida dos Plátanos, Árvore dos Morcegos, Vale das Bromélias, Miradouro do Poço do Salto da Inglesa (633 steps up a wooden staircase) and the Cascade Valley.
