Mata-Jardim do José do Canto
Mata-Jardim do José do Canto was designed and planted in the mid-19th century. XIX (1861), according to the plan of French landscapers Barillet-Deschamps and George Aumont. The project was eventually completed by George Aumont and Mata Jardim today belongs to Margarida Jácome Correa Hintze Ribeiro, great-granddaughter of the founding couple, José do Canto and his wife Maria Guilhermina Taveira de Brum da Silveira. The landscaped section, with approximately 10 ha, highlights the Vale dos Fetos, centenary camellias, sequoias (one of the largest on the island), arboreal tulip trees, giant holm oaks, marsh oaks, large araucarias and gingkos. Inside the garden there is a 2 km trail that leads to the Salto do Rosal waterfall.
Also, within the garden there is the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. It was ordered to be erected by José do Canto, as a result of a vow made on the occasion of his wife’s serious illness and is where the couple is buried.
Its construction began in 1877 in neo-Gothic style, imitating the great European cathedrals, inaugurated in 1886. It has thirteen ogival windows with beautiful stained glass windows that represent biblical scenes. This building has been classified since 2001 as a Property of Public Interest.
Entry fee except children up to 2 years old.
